January is a month

Of cold and ice and sleet,

But don't you worry, brother,

We're turning on the heat!

I love this vintage calender insert painted by Peruvian pin-up artist Alberto Vargas. Dating from 1944, it certainly brightens up the post-christmas blues. Vargas was one of the best of his time, demonstrating a flawless technique usually with watercolours and air-brushing.

The poem is great too, I've been trying to figure out why in place of the 15th there is a funny little squiggle. Any ideas?

I can't quite believe this is my first post of 2012, I had a busy month back, moving house, with an unfortunate non-existent network connection whilst working lots over the festive retail period- has not left a great deal of time for posts. Lots more to come!

Ello! December greetings guys & dolls! Now you may have already heard on the grapevine that there are some ace christmas markets this weekend...in fact there is one you shouldn't miss tomorrow... its @ The Soup Kitchen (basement) in Manchester. (see flyer) I thought I'd give you a small preview of our stock we're selling...

Me and two of my fellow creatives will be there with a table full of goodies ranging from bric-a-brac, hand-made & costume jewellery, books, bags, scarves, shoes, screen-printed, illustrated & collaged christmas cards.

We also have two rails generously filled with Barbara's customized apparel, ranging from lovely lace trimmed vests, jersey skirts and shift tops handmade from eclectic fabrics, including a pink shimmering oversized floral jumper thats amazing!!!

Hannah has created some beautiful scarves on her knitting machine using only the finest yarns and mohair. Varying in lengths, widths and colour-ways... they really are the perfect gift for christmas!

I'm selling a collection of vintage and second-hand one-off items. Coats, knitwear, jersey, polo-shirts dresses and scarves with plaid, paisley, florals, polka-dots, beading and mohair. Amongst my stock is an original Mary Quant rain mac in a kaleidoscope of red, blue, black, yellow and green!

Be sure to find something unique in our Aladdin's cave of a stall!

THE H E A R T B R E A K S @ Night&DayCafe 20/11/11

Hello all,

I can't quite believe this is my first post for December, let alone how long its actually taken me to write about The Heartbreaks amazing gig I attended last month! For those of you who may not know, I'm moving house pretty soon with my folks so I've been delving through all my stuff, clearing loads out and packing my life into boxes, which I really haven't been enjoying.

Anyhow, here are some pics I took last month of The Heartbreaks's at the Night & Day Cafe in Manchester... if you've not heard their ace sound yet... they're a lovely bunch of four talented lads from Morecambe; who write humorous, romantic and yet truthful musings about love, life, and experiences. A key inspiration in songwriting is their beloved home and seaside town of Morecambe, the places, characters and nostalgia.

The Heartbreaks, highly anticipated debut album is out next spring (I literally cannot wait for it!), up to now they've released some brilliant singles, of which you can listen to here... The lads have only just finished touring Europe a month or so back, supporting fellow Northerners Hurts and recently embarked on a small UK tour before Christmas supporting The Ordinary Boys along with The Courteeners.

All in all they were great, I thoroughly enjoyed their acoustic set at the Sunday Sessions. It was a really cool gig, ace crowd lots of mod types, desert boots, parkas, Northern Soul loving lads and tassle loafers to feast my eyes on. They have quite a strong following in Manchester. I had the pleasure of meeting them after the gig too, managed to get a quick photo with all the boys individually. Looking forward to seeing them again sometime soon.

I had a lovely chat with Matthew about touring, tweeting and his tea drinking on stage. This beautiful boy enjoys a good brew of Camomile followed by Licorice.

Deaks was really lovely, he was wearing some pretty nice loafers and a grandad cardie. We had a good chat and just like the others he politely thanked me for coming to the gig. Such a nice bunch xxx

I did record a few songs on my video camera that evening, I will definitely put them up on another post. Jealous Don't You Know is one of my favorites. Spinning good times.

Ooh I do love a good MOD lass.

Watching Quadrophenia last night has got me in that nostalgic frame of mind again. If you haven't already seen the film, I'd highly recommend you check it out (depiction of the feud between Mod's and Rockers in late 70's) there isn't a great deal of women's fashion in it as the focus is mainly on working class lads... lots of boys in Parkers and deserts, scooters galore and a young Sting too. Which is just brilliant.

I love these black & white photographs, young down-to-earth mod girls with a penchant for fun & dancing. I'm tempted to have my hair cut drastically by the looks of the pixie styles. I'll try and hold out a while longer.

Ain't she a beaut!

A month or so back, Stylist Magazine in celebration of their 100th issue, publicised a call for creative contributors to help make their next installment really special. I entered only one of the competitions; to help them style several fashion pages and shoots. I had to fill out some little snippets of information about myself as well as write about one of my favorite fashion icons.

After debating for some time, I didn't want to state the obvious kind of savvy girls, I had the intentions to write about someone genuinely interesting.... I chose Clara Bow. Unfortunately I didn't get shortlisted, but I did however receive a lovely email from Stylist with a little thank-you for entering.

Nevertheless here's what I wrote about Clara, what I love about her and why I chose her as my style icon. Hope you enjoy reading xxx

My fashion icon is a girl who paraded around in the twenties rocking silk stockings and heavily embellished cocktail dresses. She goes by the name of Clara Bow, with heavily lined dark doe eyes, a tousled brunette mane and a perfectly plump Cupid’s bow pout.

Her fashion sense is no less than the epitome of sultry glamour. Usually seen decked from head-to-toe in romantic ensembles of sumptuous chiffon, flowing frills and fur stoles; she was one of the original reigning and importantly most stylish roaring flappers to have graced silent cinema.

Looking back, I admire her eclectic personal style and characterization in cinema as it exuded a lady-like-chic quality crossed with 1920’s androgyny. Clara made drop waist dresses and masculine tailoring look effortlessly savvy and seductive.

Fascinatingly beautiful to look at, with unique decadent style to match, Clara Bow has an incredible legacy and is my fashion muse.

Here are some photographs I took last weekend in York. Coinciding with Halloween my favorite Ukrainian twins Hannah, Laura and I decided to spend a few days in the historically spooky Northern town.

Having never visited York before, I was rather excited and had heard so many lovely things about the place. We wrapped up warm, admired the autumn leaves and wandered around the quaint streets laden with beautiful period buildings.

The loveliest stall holder in York

On the Sunday we came across a fab vintage market stall, owned by a very kind and friendly lady called Donna. Most of her wares were dead-stock, many originally from the 50's and 60's. I was really surprised to find that everything on her stall was actually half of the ticket price, I just couldn't resist a bargain. I bought a dark green hairy wool jacket and matching skirt, that is so warm and with the added bonus of the lining being in perfect pristine condition. I also purchased a thick bright green mohair scarf/wrap and burgundy wool scarf.

I will have to post some pics up soon of my wares as they are such gems! I'm not ashamed to say I haven't had the coat off since the weekend, it's too cosy! All in all I only spent £25 thanks to Donna's generous ways...I would definitely pay her another visit soon for a Sunday market shopping day.

It was such a brilliant trip. I would highly recommend anyone to visit. With it being Halloween and all, me and the girls went to York Dungeons which was highly amusing. I actually got burned at the stake in the last room on the tour for being a *dirty witch* or so I was told. But hey I've lived to tell the tale! xxx

Sixties SIRENS...

I constantly find myself referencing the past particularly with fashion, seeking inspiration where I can find it and venturing down style avenue's that are hard to come by. I've recently found myself entwined in a cloud of past memoirs and a diverse range of nostalgic music and visuals dating back to the late 60's.

I guess this post is a current exploration of my interests revolving around style, icons and cool peeps who I've been checking out lately...

Suze Rotolo (pictured here with Dylan), was an incredibly beautiful Italian American who dated Dylan in the early years of his rise to fame. She was his muse and absolute sweetheart in the early sixties. I've just read her biographical rendition of Greenwich Village in the sixties entitled 'A Freewheelin Time' which is so lovely and enlightening, I would highly recommend it.

Edie with her crop of ashy blonde hair and adoringly wide eyed gaze. Over the past month or so I've been perfecting the art of sixties eyes, with a concoction of a fine brush, Black waterproof liquid eyeliner, white powder, potion eye-shadow by Topshop, all topped off with black and white kohl.

I've been attempting to follow this little beauty of a make-up tutorial ala Twiggy.

I've been getting really into Martha & The Vandellas, a fantastically upbeat and sparkling Motown group consisting of 3 attractive soulful singers in the late to mid 60s. They have that magic vibe, after a few listens that somehow instantly lifts my mood. Their lyrics are sweet, funny and tell that of a typical kinda make or break love story back in the day. I just adore them, here is one of my favorite songs of the moment...

Last Sunday I had the pleasure of receiving a blogger invitation to Boohoo's open model casting. The affordable Manchester fashion brand based online, were searching for their next big star to feature in their new "Real Women" fashion campaign.

Before entering number 20 Dale Street, where the event was held, I did not really know what to expect and arrived alone with my camera and notebook. I was greeted by the friendly staff in the foyer of the spacious office building, was quickly ticked off the list and led upstairs by one of the Boohoo members. I initially thought I'd missed the buzz early on in the day, as it seemed quiet and there were no longer queues outside the building like there was first thing.

I was taken to the second floor in a lift, turned a corner and was faced with a huge line of hopefuls; girls of dissimilar heights, shapes, ages and ethnicity's. The turnout was lovely to see, tall, petite and curvy

girls all vying for the same position...to be Boohoo's next star!

The casting doors opened at the stroke of 12.00 with tonnes of girls anticipating the event queueing outside next to the red velvet rope. On entering the building, each participant was registered with a Boohoo team member and given a personal number sticker.

Girls were guided upstairs to the wonderfully spacious casting suite filled with seats, a DJ booth, sweets, goodie bags, Boohoo's new A/W collection and various creative stations for the casting.

On their arrival each aspiring model was invited to have her hair and make-up done by a Boohoo beauty team member pre-shoot.

After hair and make-up it was time to join the endless queue...and one by one each participant was called to have her professional photograph taken by the amazing team on-hand.

Photos were then cropped & edited by the Boohoo technical team, and uploaded onto Facebook.

The final part of the open casting; invited each participant into the Catwalk suite where a panel of judges including special guests were waiting on their arrival.

Edith Uba is the next girl in line hoping to impress the judges...

After strutting their stuff on the beautifully elongated white catwalk, each girl was asked a series of questions... one being, What do you think you could you bring to the Boohoo Real Women Campaign?

The judges chatted with contestant Edith Uba (pictured on the catwalk) about her views on the brand and why she would like to star in the new Boohoo Campaign.

Ready to take note...the panel including guest judge Misha B, listen intently to Edith's responses.

Excitingly, I managed to have a quick chat with beautiful contestant Edith Uba on her exit from the judging room.

Stunning in looks, 18 year-old Edith a Londoner, originally born in Italy, is about to venture off to Nottingham to study Property Investment and Finance. We chatted about her model aspirations and what attracted her to the Boohoo open model casting event. In response Edith stated she could bring flavour, excitement, individuality and color to the open model casting. One of the friendliest girls I chatted with that day, Edith was a fantastic contender oozing breathtaking beauty and a lovely bubbly personality.

One of the quirkiest girls I'd spotted queueing up for judging was 19 year-old Disa from South Wales, I couldn't resist having a quick chat with her. Sweet, chatty and remarkably individual, Disa hoped she could bring a unique style to the Boohoo Real Women Campaign. Wearing a mix of clothing and accessories from high street stores such as Newlook, Disa sported a handmade headband which added to her eclectic look perfectly. She stated that her favorite role model was the glamorous Tyra Banks.

Throughout the day there were public appearances from guest judges singer Jodie Connor, rapper R.I.O and Coronation Street Stars Michelle Keegan & Ryan Thomas (pictured below).

I had the pleasure of also meeting a very special performer Miss Misha Bryan from Manchester, who made me feel a little starstruck! Talented Misha has been shortlisted in the top 4 females appearing on this years X-Factor, not only is she my favorite, Misha has been tipped as one of the potential winners this year. Come on girl!

Before I attended I didn't really know what to expect from the casting event, I can say I had a fabulous time thanks to being personally invited by the Boohoo marketing team. I met so many lovely people, and got to know the Boohoo team and more about the brand. Generously I was given a £50 gift voucher on my arrival to use online along with some other goodies! I'll be spending that pretty soon! Thanks Boohoo. I hope you all enjoy reading my post about the casting event, it really was a great day! I wish all of the girls the best of luck...it's gonna be a pretty hard decision xxx

Boy meets Girl

Here are some really nice images I found dating back to Teen Vogue's August 2009 issue. I have always been really interested in androgyny and typical guy trends for girls. I particularly like her loafers and rolled up jeans, they remind me of This Is England crossed with the 1950's which gives a hint of Teddy Girl style.

The quiff is pretty nice too, I've recently dyed my hair brunette and have been gelling it back with some mousse and Brylcreem in hope of trying to achieve a sleek do look like this.

It's always fascinating to see models leaping around too, these shots look particularly fun! I'm not sure who the photographer is...but nice work none-the-less. I'm tempted now to dye my vintage 80's jeans indigo blue and buy some Dr Martens Adrian loafers. xxx

Considering the snazzy London based footwear brand F-troupe has only been around circa 2003, its certainly spread its very stylish wings afar thanks to founder Mick Hoyle. Now stocking online and in store of high street favorites ASOS and Urban Outfitters, not to mention in 24 countries, the brand is going from strength to strength each season with refreshing and quintessential takes on the unique F-Troupe staple shoe.

With an English eccentric attitude to tradition, practicality and savvy street style, F-Troupe really is a footwear brand that you don't come across everyday.

Punched out leather stars, buttons, bows, patent leather and Dalmatian printed pony hair are just to name a few of the quirky details that come with each pair.

With so many beautiful styles to choose from it really is very difficult to settle for just the one pair. I can say wholeheartedly that I am an avid fan of the brand. Though the price-tag so far has deterred me from buying a pair just yet. I am considering purchasing a pair next payday or 'investment buying' as I like to call it.

In saying that though, to actually handle a pair, you can clearly see the amazing craftsmanship and quality that lovingly has gone into each shoe. The leather is of an extremely high quality, and F-Troupe pride themselves in British heritage but in appealing also to a wide international audience.

I can't remember how I first came across the brand, but essentially I am drawn to the retro appeal that F-Troupe seem to have nailed down to a t; in their ever-evolving design and style ethos.

Such an amazing brand to say the least with equally exciting styles that pop out every new coming season. I must say I am quite in love with literally every pair of shoes that I have laid my eyes on from their fantastic website F-TROUPE.com. I am particularly in love with the black, green and purple suede lace-ups. They remind me of a modern take on a 1920's bathing shoe that a modern day English eccentric would wear.

It's gonna be a hard decision narrowing it down to just one pair, somehow I think I can do it! What are your favorites? XXX

Beautiful Buildings...

Here are some photographs I took whilst wandering around the beautiful city of Corfu. I wasn't expecting the place to be as grand as it was nor how old the buildings were in their picturesque crumbling state. It was extremely hot when I was visiting last month, as you can probably tell from the well-lit buildings and shadows scattered across the stone facades.

I was in awe of the painted pastel wooden shutters, colorful coving, swirly cast iron verandas and warm terracotta washed buildings. It was fascinating looking at all of the structures, some that I noticed were incredibly symmetrical. The town exuded so much character and nostalgic memoirs, I couldn't help but imagine what it used to be like in the 30's.

A town that appeared untouched and decaying with beauty. It had such a great bustling and slowly up and coming cosmopolitan vibe.

1# Boutique by Jaeger beauts...

Over the next few weeks I have decided to comparatively list and write about 5 of my favorite and most importantly -affordable and accessible- fashion brands of the moment. Boutique by Jaeger initially snook in first because I've been so excited about the current collection.

Above is are some of my favorite shots from the Boutique by Jaeger look-book. Summer is finally over now that we've entered early september and this thankfully means another uncontrollably lustful collection by the creative geniuses behind this uber cute high street brand!!!

Stocked in House of Fraser as well as it's big sister store Jaeger... Boutique this season showcases an eclectic range of winter warmers such as snuggly duffel coats, cord shorts and slim fitting knits. Last summer's collection had a feel for nostalgia with 60's structured shapes and late 50's vintage inspired color schemes.

It is clear to see for AW/11 that Boutique's notorious playful streak from the last collection has been refined and effectively replaced by a much sleeker, muted and more practical looking wardrobe. Very much the envious stylish and creative girl next door who loves to work in the big city.

This season you can expect mysterious illustrative prints, dark gingham, earthy fairisle patterned knits, sequin peter pan collar blouses and classic polka dots.

I must say, I really am a fan of these autumn winter pieces (in comparison to last season)...I hate to admit it...but I love wrapping up warm on a cold winters day. I have always preferred crisp autumn mornings, leaving the house first thing especially when Jack Frost has been about!

Needless to say I want it all...every single piece! Will have to start saving pronto XXX

Beside the Sea...

Here are the first lot of photos from my holiday, I took over 500 on one camera so have decided to categorize them in themed posts. Earlier this month I went to Kanoni in Corfu, Greece with a good friend. We were 10 mins walk away from this idyllic bay with cosy cafe's, a sandy beach tucked away around the corner and picturesque scenery of local boats, greenery and a quaint white chapel.

Every evening the sky turned a different array of colors, which was fascinating to watch, and the moon's reflection glistened on the water, it really was one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. XXX

I came across this beautiful image and couldn't resist putting it up, maybe because I'm such a fan of colorful umbrella's. I like the sepia muted tones in this aside from the elegance and poise that only Audrey could pull off with this little Manchester weather necessity!

I haven't really been blogging much lately, just got back a week or so ago from a lovely and very idyllic holiday in Greece which I soon will be putting up dozens of photos of. Planning some style posts too and I have a new exciting contributing writing position for a website called Style Sequel...will be getting on it in the next few days, I literally can't wait to start churning out some new articles again...it's been too long! She's such a babe. A young Goldie Hawn circa 1969 in Cactus Flower...a film of which I have of yet to watch. Love her bright eyes, pointy collar and late 60's bouffant hair. Would really like to get mine like this...currently at the in-between hair stage of growing it out. Probably, not the last picture of her to be going up...I've come across some crackers this week. Here is a collection of utterly beautiful paintings by the incredible Claude Monet, that I wanted to share with you. I have always been a fan of his work especially his variations of the Waterlilies and in particular his Impression of the Sunrise. I love the warm hues in his paintings, the blurry impressionable strokes that create a dreamy and idyllic sense of imagery.

With no holidays booked so far, I'll just be gazing into more of Monet's paintings for now...the beautiful landscapes and glittering reflections seem to transport my imagination to a wonderful kind of place.

For as long as I can remember I have so very admired and gushed quite a fair bit at the work of British Illustrator Julie Verhoeven. Her drawings are captivating flamboyant, vivacious and provocative. Her explosive use of colour depicts her invented sinister-esque characters well bringing them to life, giving them personality and an identity within the fashion world.

Not only is she a fab illustrator, she is an incredibly eccentric snappy dresser too. Rarely seen without clashing bold prints, patterns and spots in sight, Verhoeven's wardrobe epitomises her character ideals and their mischievous yet scantily clad acid individuality.

Throughout my life as both a student and now graduate, I find myself constantly referencing her work for inspiration, technique and color theory. She is indefinitely on my list of icons, not only for her tremendous artistic contribution to the fashion and arts world...pushing boundaries for print and illustration to be featured more in fashion through mutual collaboration. But also for her fabulous style, living inspiration and artistic genius. Amazing lady!!!

I visited my very special friend Isis, who I've known for 8 years now. We had such a great time, went out on the tiles to Fab Cafe, that's where the two trippy photographs were taken! Isis has just completed her degree BA (Hons) Fine Art at Leeds, which is very exciting! Her work was incredibly beautiful, an embroidered surface decoration inspired by intricate motifs and pattern that were interestingly stitched with human hair! Such a talented lady! Well done sweetie, I loved your exhibition! xxx

Is it wrong to be in love with a pair of shoes? I literally fell head over heels when I saw these beauties on Ebay. I've been scouring a lot lately on there mostly looking for shoes but have never seen any like this before. They are Vintage Bandilino lipstick red suede loafers and to my delight apparently dating back from the eighties! yay!

They were an absolute bargain $16.95 I think. Remind me of Dorothy's Ruby slippers crossed with La Roux's interesting footwear choices. I can't wait to wear them!!!

Booth & Bruce Blue Tortoise shell spectacles...another new love in my life.

Having had my eyes tested a month or so back, I indeedy needed some specs and chose these stunning glasses from Seen Opticians which is in St Anne's Arcade, Manchester. I was recommended there by a friend and it all sounded too good to be true so I thought I'd go and have a wander in. Little did I know, there are so many unique and beautiful specs to buy in this wonderful shop, you really should check it out if you've never been! The staff are super lovely too, an ace lady Collette helped me pick them out. They are pricey in there though, I was lucky enough to have my birthday soon enough!

Unfortunately I only need them for short-sight, reading and when I'm typing but I love wearing them at most opportunities (well when I'm in work), everything just becomes more magnified. They are dark tortoise shell with pale blue transparent arms with a pale blue stripe running through the frame too. Some people have even been kind enough to say they look Audrey Hepburn esque!

I love them they are so lush!

Just a quick post as I haven't put anything on here for a while...alas I am working later and need to eat lunch too. The other day I had the pleasure of being introduced to one of my new favorite (old movie) actresses whose career flourished from the early 50's to late 80's. I've found myself lately pouring over old movies particularly from the late fifties to early sixties. I'm spellbound by the fashion, chic hair-cuts and inevitable heart-wrenching romantic can't live without you love scenes. It's all too good.

If you haven't seen Bell, Book and Candle that stars Kim Novak, James Stewart and not forgetting the fantastic Jack Lemmon, circa 1958, you should check it out, its a great film, has a cute siamese in it too. Kim's looks absolutely stunning in every scene, with lilac tinged hair and flawless siren make-up. In one part she wears a particularly beautiful leopard cape which I wouldn't mind getting my hands on! I just wish clothes were still made like that.

KATE & WILLS BIG DAY PART 2; THOMAS STREET TREAT PARTY

As I unfortunately had to work on the Royal Wedding Day, I didn't get to watch the lovely event in its entirety... however me being super organised, I timed the major highlights and kept running upstairs to the work canteen to watch it on the telly there! I got to see the double kiss which I was incredibly happy about!

After work, I headed down to the Northern Qtr to join in the celebrations. Above are my photographs that I took on the day, with two of my bezzies Hannah and Laura. Thomas Street was absolutely rammed, the atmosphere was electric and everyone seemed to be having the best time. It was honestly the most amazing street rave/party/gathering I'd ever been to. Felt really surreal but extremely fun too. Good Music, great company, delicious food, lovely alcoholic beverages and pretty bunting...what more could you ask for?! Nowt I say.

I just hope there is something like this again sometime soon! It was so ACE!

KATE & WILLS ROYAL WEDDING WONDER...

The Royal Wedding that took place on the 29th April 2011 was utterly perfect... such a splendid day of fun, frolicks, romance and companionship. It was really lovely for the whole nation to come together and celebrate such a great day!

Epitomizing that of a fairytale... Kate's dress was so beautiful and highly reminiscent of Grace Kelly's stunning post-war lace gown. It goes without saying this design has 1950's stylistic undertones. The clever combination of sumptuous box pleats, lace and intricate embroidery completed by the Royal School of Needlework created such a captivating statement.

Intrinsically traditional and elegant with contemporary details...Sarah Burton surely has done Alexander McQueen proud... a gown suitably fit for a princess!

I thought that Wills military ensemble was the perfect stylish accompaniment to Kate's dress too, loved the medals, contrasting blue sash and gold trimmings. His bold red jacket stood out wonderfully against the clean pure ivory satin layers of Kate's gown with a nine-foot train.

Recently I've found myself pouring over beautiful shiny beads, sumptuous ribbons and glistening chains only a mermaid would be proud to adorn. Unfortunately I just simply cannot afford these prices.

Currently I've been really interested in the line of accessories by Day Birger et Mikkelsen, who only use the best quality materials to create something that looks really special and utterly wearable! Monsoon also have some really pretty pieces integrating ribbons, pearls, trinkets that channel a more vintage inspired theme.

Checking out all these lovely shiny things, has made me want to dabble in a bit of handmade chic! I started making some jewellery a while back and then stopped it... can't quite remember why. Since starting on Whistles, I've been wearing some of my old creations and I'm happy to say I've had more than a handful of compliments!

I love using an eclectic mix of bright colors, yarn, wooden, glass and porcelain beads sourced from all over really. So watch this space...I'm planning on making some good stuff soon!

I am more than happy to announce that I am now a fully-fledged Whistles girl! Hurrah! New job, new start for me...as I recently hopped over from Bastyan to the Whistles concession within House of Fraser, Manchester.

Pretty exciting times, more money, prettier clothes and I have the loveliest manager...one of my best friends miss Grace...which is even better! Onwards and upwards I say!

Here is a small collective of my favorite shots from the current Whistles campaign. Worked intrinsically into the collection are beautiful clean lines, subtle warm shades and playful prints. Late 60's early 70's styles combined with preppy luxe create a high glamour for the high street kinda vibe.

New Drawings

Here are a small showcase of drawings I've done over the past few weeks, just thought I'd post them. Inspiration was taken from various portrait photographs in magazines. Currently I'm quite into doing scruffy quick sketches with my fine liner and for some reason I don't get round to adding colour, even though I'm a big fan of it!

I decided to paint the first illustration with watercolours, in order to give her more personality, which I think works! Injecting colour is something I'm working on.

Dare I say one of the finest collections to come out on the high street this year...Jaeger Boutique SS/11 is utterly stunning to say the least. Its the kind of capsule wardrobe that every stylish young lady dreams about...including myself.

With a collection of utterly stunning pieces ranging from 50's inspired prom dresses, smart utility trousers, cute macs and classic polka dot prints... there is no doubt that this label will be selling like hot cakes!

Recently launched in my local workplace, House Of Fraser Manchester, I was instantly drawn to the refreshingly youthful approach to day-wear meets work-wear. A lot of pieces in the collection actually remind me of styles modelled by that of the land girls in the First and Second World Wars. Maybe its the muted palettes, khaki greens and rik rak prints that make me reminisce of these times.

The bags are so beautiful too, along with the printed animal tees. I like how the look-book has been styled up with plain white pumps, I think this makes the collection look more fresh and in a sense classic.

I would without a doubt wear the whole collection, I've got my eye on the Micro Stripe Shirt dress (2nd from bottom image) and the Boucle Prom dress. (last image) I have some money saved from Christmas so maybe I'll splurge and treat myself! I'm afraid I won't have any money soon enough as these beautiful pieces do come with a hefty price tag!

It's all gone...my hair that is. I was inspired by the very beautiful Mia Farrow to get the chop, she is so chic, I'm aspiring to be like her at the moment. I've always admired styles in the 60's particularly the cute shift dresses and extreme cropped hairstyles. I only had my haircut yesterday, I found it very liberating and I love it! It's the perfect pick me up x

Here is a collection of photographs I took last Sunday whilst visiting Heaton Park. Luckily the weather behaved itself and didn't rain all day in the park, even though it was somewhat grey with just small glimpses of sunshine. Me and my boyfriend Billy even managed to grab an ice-cream, it was a very nice day indeed.

My favorite characters of the day were the Alpaca and the Highland Cows, they were so beautiful. I was thinking about doing some drawings from these images, particularly of the ducks and chickens, they were such cuties.

Some beautiful art by talented artist and musician Bob Dylan. The Three Chairs from the 2009 collection is my favorite. All of the other prints are Limited Edition from his 2010 collection- The Drawn Blank Series. I love Dylan's loose gestural style, it reminds me of work by The Fauves in the early 20th century, explosive in colour and texture. I like the contrast of the harsh dark lines with his soft and calm colour palette.

I would like to think in my heart that I am a Louise Gray kinda girl...and that her creations suit me down to the ground. Because they are so utterly beautiful...vibrantly chaotic, tactile and elegantly flamboyant.

She is one clever lady. I love her latest collection for SS/11, which showcases pastel perfect clobber, alongside clashing prints, eclectic rags, knots, layering and loose threads.

Entwined in her design ethic are 80's colour-ways with the essence of 90's rave chic, polished and brought up to date for the 21st century gutsy girl.

Having studied textile design and embroidery, Louise's attention to detail is exquisitely eccentric with layers of fabric emblazoned with off the wall embellishments and prints.

SO So excited to see what she showcases at Fashion week later today... I wish I was there...no doubt that she will rock it outlandishly!

A few days after attending the fantastic Consequences exhibition at Nexus Art Cafe, my lovely friend Miss Freyia Lilian Porteous conducted a beautiful little workshop to accompany her work, inspired by 18th century keepsakes.

A 'Lovers Eye' signifies a piece of decorative jewellery adorned with a miniature portrait of an eye of a loved one. These romantically bizarre yet beautiful pieces of ornate jewellery, often had hand-painted eyes situated in the centre of pendants, brooches and rings. To wear one of these pieces can ultimately be an expression of love and adoration for another whilst can also represent the loss of a loved one hence mourning jewellery.

Freyia's workshop was so lovely, instead of traditionally hand-painting eyes, magazine cuttings and photographs were provided. Along with pretty fragments of broken jewellery, beads, dimantes and flat back brooches.

Here is my lovely friend Freyia, I got her to model the pieces she made because they looked soooooo good! I recon her pieces could well and truly pass as the oroginals as she decorated them so beautifully with personal photographic eyes, such as her own and her grandmothers.

Here is my very own handcrafted Lovers Eye! I had fun making it, I cut out a model's eye from a magazine as well as a detail embellishment on a dress spelling out 'rocker'. I wanted to make a more contemporary version of one of these pieces. I adorned my brooch-pin with a string of vintage pearls, a paper flower and some small delicate dimantes. With the placing of the jewels, I think my lovers eye has a slight Middle Eastern feel to it, what do you think?

Situated in the wholesome abode of Nexus Art Cafe, this venue utterly was perfect for displaying this creative collective.

Snow days...

For days, I'd been meaning to take photos in the snow...since the very first drops last week.

I managed to get round to it this week and also captured my dog Charlie who is an Old English Sheepdog in some of the pictures too! He loves the snow and when its windy too, but he prefers to gallop throughout the white fields at the back of my house. I'm quite lucky to have my house back onto a golf course especially when its frosty or has snowed, it always looks really picturesque. On the way home I took some photographs also of All Saints Church and cemetery.

Another great: DAISY DE VILLENEUVE

She is amazing, great brogues too.

Just a quick post, been looking at some of Daisy's fab work this morning and couldn't resist not writing a post on it. Daisy De Villeneuve is a London born lass, a designer, illustrator and writer extraordinaire (what I'm currently aspiring to at the moment).

Her work is vibrant, spunky and speaks volumes through her creative use of the classic felt tip pen. Her colour-ways, characters and scenarios that are constructed with added text, are full of energy and are just too lovely visually. They always manage to cheer me up :)

Funnily enough, Daisy looks the spitting image of many her illustrations which is quite remarkable. I think this can happen a lot, people have said to me before that I look like my work.

This week I'm going to be getting on with some drawing, I'll post some of my work if and when I'm happy with it, I feel my creative streak is coming back...Finally!!!

TINA BERNING: still a firm favorite

I first discovered the beautiful work of German illustrator Tina Berning when I was studying on my embroidery degree. I would always flock to find new inspiring illustrators and artists that I hadn't come across before. And nevertheless I found an amazing inspiration in the form of wet media laden portrait drawings by Berning.

I admire her skill and technique, in the way she depicts her stunning yet slightly haunting characters. Her drawings never cease to amaze me, and the ladies in her work always seem to possess a fragile and eccentric quality. Berning's work is saturated with personality and contemporary flair. I love her hints of colour on sandy paper.

I have of yet to buy her ace book 100 girls on cheap paper, but keep thinking about it so I may treat myself soon!

I've been asked to create 3 portrait lady prints for an newly established British womens-wear brand, which is oh so very exciting as its right up my street. I shall reveal all nearer the time!!!

I've been looking through some examples of Berning's work for inspiration for my own, as it is just fabulous!

A feast for your eyes...GHD's & THE LABYRINTH

This advert is stunning to say the least, when it graced my television screen earlier this month I was dumbfounded by its sheer visual beauty and great modern day interpretation of a Cinderella story. The costumes are amazing, the wigs, make-up, the protagonists hair post GHD's, the set, the scenario, the ego's, everything looks so beautifully refined. I particularly love the staircase scene, when the girls' dress and hair are becoming rapidly dishevelled and her couture is tumbling down the stairs. So stunning!

This almost reminds me a little of The Labyrinth too, in the ballroom scene minus all the masks and more glamorized to the present day. What do you think?

Feast your eyes on some lovely work by Indian illustrator, artist and designer extraordinaire Tanya Ling, who now resides in London. I came across her work just today actually and couldn't resist sharing it on my blog because her drawings are especially beautiful!

Tanya's work concentrates mostly on portraiture and figures that are drawn from life or backstage at fashion shows. I really love her style and the technique in which she depicts her glamorous subjects, that with splashes of colour, daubs of paint and smudged ink lines. Nothing better than painting and getting messy with wet media!

I've noticed too how lots of her illustrations feature on coloured paper such as sandy backgrounds, its sometimes frustrating starting a drawing on a huge piece of white paper...it can be definitely be intimidating!

Lots of Tanya's work has been featured in publications such as British Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and she's successfully done creative collaborations with world renowned designers such as Louis Vuitton and Diane Von Furstenberg.

Aside from her drawings, Tanya is also creative director for RTW high end fashion brand Veryta, in which she designed a collection of abstract painted dresses, that were shown at London Fashion Week earlier this year (shown in images above). I imagine wearing one would feel very jazzy indeed...fashion and expressionism combined in its finest form.

I couldn't resist putting these beautiful images on my blog, they are recent Radley campaign posters that have been featured in many of the contemporary window fittings on the high street. The colours, objects and feel of English eccentricity works really well alongside the exquisitely dressed models and their beautiful accessories. The first image book image and the last collaged yellow wall are my favourites, I love clutter, as bad as it sounds, I am such a hoarder and these settings make organised chaos look really chic. I so wanna be a Radley girl!

So i thought it was about time to put up an outfit post at last... I recently had this photo took by my lovely friend recent knitwear graduate Hannah Shkandrij...we were on our way to Trof for some drinks and stopped by this pretty wall. I was quite chuffed that the yellow bricks were a perfect match for my jeans. I recently invested in some expensive togs for a change, I want to try and spend less money overtime and hopefully my clothes will last a bit longer than usual. Investing in good timeless pieces that will carry me through the next few seasons.

Like my coat from Whistles, I picked it up at The Lowry Outlet for £65, I think its a few seasons old and was a complete snippet from the £250 original price tag! Its wool, so its really warm and not too thick which has been a desirable for me at the moment, I tend to wear too many layers when its cold.

My silk scarf is Moschino courtesy of Tkmaxx and has Cheap & Chic scrawled all over it, the green studded tassle bag is from Topshop, rolled up stripy jeans i bought in Barnardos Deansgate which are my favourite purchase this Autumn, were only a fiver and brand new with tags- must have been unused vintage stock.

For a while too I'd been eyeing up some burgandy patent Chester tassle Russell and Bromley loafers, I'd been in and out of the shop a couple of times trying them on and thinking YES! they are utterly perfect but I'm not made of money! I actually found the exact size and colour I wanted a week or so back, on Ebay, I was so delighted when got the winning bid! They are well comfy and i snagged them for half the price in the shop.

Even better they are always shiny perfect for the regular Manchester downpour! x

The Beautiful work of Nathalie Lete

Ace Parisian artist Nathalie Lete... is my new heroine. Her work is stunningly sweet with childlike drawings, paintings, etchings, ceramic art and prints that are illustrated in warm bright colours.

Her interior pieces are equally as beautiful with hand tufted rugs, one off ceramic ornaments and lovingly hand painted plates with funny faces and animals. OOOh I want this lovely *Paris* rug!!!

Her work is sold all over the world in cute little boutiques including Couverture in Notting Hill, I know where I'll be stopping off the next time I'm in London!

Inspired by nostalgia, nature and vintage toys, Nathalie has an ongrowing collection of quirky objects and figurines that fill her colourful house and work studio.

Nathalie's style as an artist and designer is truly unique and her expression of colour, print and pattern is really very special. Since coming across her work only a few weeks ago, i have been inspired by her beautiful work...though I has of yet to pick up a paintbrush...maybe sometime soon eh!

Yesterday i completed another fashion post for Anyweargirl.com. I've been writing for them on a seasonal basis since March and this happens to be my third post for them! This time around i focused on my recent trip to Brighton and wrote a little about places to go that i like. I posted some nice photos too along with a personal style post. The Perfect Retro Wedding

Last weekend i had the pleasure of attending my very good friend's Zara Kate Pacholski's wedding. It turned out to be one of the loveliest ceremony's i have ever attended. This is a post dedicated to Zara's beautiful wedding attire.

Pictured in Bury's Polish club, Zara in her gorgeous vintage 1950's wedding dress from Ebay.

A stunning beaded veil/head-dress with pearl & lucite beads, was complimented perfectly by Zara's short thick fringe.

Beautiful embroidery detail on the gathered neck, that had little dimante's centered in each flower, paired with a pretty ivory lace choker dangling teardrop pearls.

White lace dress draped over white satin shoes complete with wedding blessed scuff from jumping around in photos on the grass. The shoes had sweet little dimante buttons on each strap.

The head wedding table pictured behind Zara, along with the handpainted polish mural landscape, which happens to be one of the most kitsch and idyllic settings I've ever seen for an post-wedding reception.

The best retro bride that I've ever seen, Congrats Zara lots of love x x x x x x x
